Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in Puducherry: A Festival of Unity, Creativity, and Tradition

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a festival that marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the beloved deity of prosperity and wisdom in Hinduism. This auspicious celebration begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, typically falling in August or September.

The Festival’s Commencement

To kick off the festivities, idols of Lord Ganesha are placed on elevated platforms in homes or beautifully adorned in outdoor tents. Lord Ganesha is also offered coconut, jaggery, and 21 modaks, sweet dumplings considered to be His favorite treat. This auspicious occasion, celebrated with great enthusiasm, is a beautiful amalgamation of traditions, devotion, and community spirit.

A Vibrant Market Scene in Pondicherry

As the sun’s first rays pierce through the dawn, they seem to sprinkle golden light upon the bustling market streets of Pondicherry. The air is filled with anticipation, and the vibrant energy of the festival is palpable. Here, amidst the colorful array of fruits, vegetables, and sugarcane, you’ll find a treasure trove of items required for the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja. Mud clay Pillayars, umbrellas for Ganesha, fragrant garlands, fresh fruits, vegetables, and various pooja essentials are readily available in the bustling of the Ambalathadayar madam Street (Kosakadai) and Saram market. Artisans even craft Ganesh idols right on the spot, showcasing their skill and dedication.

These small mud clay pillayars enter everyone’s home on the occasion, all the offerings are placed in front of the pillayar. Every household decorates the pillayar with flowers, and garland and perform pooja and rituals.

What makes Ganesh Chaturthi in Pondicherry truly unique is the tradition of setting up massive pillayars with captivating themes in every small town. These themes are often inspired by significant local events that transpired in the city, state, or country during the year. The creativity in designing these pillayars knows no bounds, resulting in extraordinary portrayals. You can witness the astounding imagination of the people of Pondicherry.

The Immersion Ritual alongside the Goubert Avenue

At the conclusion of the festival, massive processions bearing the idol stroll through the streets before immersing it in the sea. After the ritual, the small mud clay pillayars are carried to nearby waterbodies like pond, well or lake for immersion. The cry “Ganpati Bappa Moraya” fills the air, pleading with the deity to take away life’s sufferings and to return soon the following year.

At the culmination of the festival, a grand procession unfolds as the giant idols that decorated the streets of Puducherry are carried to the sea. This procession, accompanied by rhythmic drumbeats, devotional singing, and joyful dancing, is a spectacle to behold. Hundreds of people follow the towering idols as they are carried through the streets of Goubert Avenue. All the giant pillayars are gathered at the Puducherry harbour (old port) and immersed into the sea using boats with the support of a crane. The spectacle of the processions meandering through the roads has to be seen to be believed.
