Sri Kameshwarar Temple

The Thiru Kameshwarar Temple, also known as the Villianur Temple, is a historic Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva that is located in the quaint village of Villianur, 10 km from the white town of Pondicherry. The temple is well-known for both its spiritual and historical value, attracting worshippers and history buffs from all around.

The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is worshipped as Kameeswarar, while it also houses shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati (known as Gokilambal Amman) and Lord Murugan, among other deities. What makes this temple particularly special is the belief that Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of a Linga (Swayambulinga), making it a sacred place of self-revelation.

 

The history of Villianur Temple dates back around a thousand years, with its construction attributed to a Chola king in the 12th century CE. Legend has it that the king, suffering from leprosy, sought the blessings of Lord Shiva and was miraculously cured. In gratitude, he commissioned the construction of the temple and founded the town of Vilwanallur, named after the surrounding forest of Vilwa trees. Over the centuries, successive Chola rulers and the Vijayanagar Empire contributed to the temple’s expansion, adding various structures that reflect the architectural prowess of their times. The masonry work, in particular, is believed to have been carried out during the 16th century, further enhancing the temple’s splendour.

On the 9th, 11th, and 19th days of the Panguni month (March-April), the sun’s rays align in such a way that they directly fall on the deity, creating a mesmerising sight and adding to the temple’s mystical allure. This act is considered a profound form of devotion. The prevalent belief is that engaging in the chariot-pulling ritual leads to the fulfilment of one’s prayers by the deity. The grand festival, marked by its opulence, takes place in the months of May and June.
