Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Welcome to the enchanting Manakula Vinayagar Temple, located on the northern side of White Town in Puducherry. Immerse yourself in the rich history of this renowned Hindu temple, dating back over 300 years. The temple’s name, derived from Tamil words meaning “sand pond,” refers to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal and the surrounding sandy area. Marvel at its awe-inspiring Dravidian architecture and intricate sculptures, which capture the essence of ancient artistry.

Moreover, part of its charm lies in the temple’s connection to Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. In a gesture of generosity, a portion of land measuring 106.56 square meters was gifted on January 21, 1969, to expand the southern side of the Parikrama Arilmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple, blessed by the Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

Step inside and prepare to be captivated by the grandeur that awaits. Spanning an area of 6813 square feet, it features a gold-laminated kodi kambam (flagstaff) standing 18 feet tall. Witness the opulence of the golden chariot, a testament to devotees’ generosity, adorned with 7 kg of pure gold. Within these sacred walls, discover over 60 exquisite idols of Lord Ganesha and vibrant paintings depicting revered deities. Each stroke of the brush and every sculpted detail tells a story, creating a kaleidoscope of divine beauty that will leave you in awe. The temple is renowned for its rich history, mythical tales, and festivals, attracting devotees seeking blessings from Lord Ganesha, the fulfiller of wishes. The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Murugan, the brother of Ganesha, and other important Hindu gods and goddesses.

While you explore, you may come across the cherished memory of Lakshmi, the beloved temple elephant, whose gentle presence once graced the entrance. Although she is no longer with us, her spirit lingers, adding to the temple’s unique charm. Lakshmi passed away on November 30, 2022, leaving a void in our hearts.

Be part of the vibrant festivities that come alive during the 24-day-long Brahmothsavam festival. Immerse yourself in the joyous celebrations, as devotees from far and wide gather to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha. Other important occasions, such as Vinayagar Chaturthi, also see a surge of devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha. Experience the pulsating energy of devotion and the warmth of a community united in faith.
