Ousteri Lake, also known as Osudu Lake or Ossudu Lake, is a captivating freshwater haven nestled approximately 11 km from the picturesque white town of Puducherry. As you approach this enchanting destination, you’ll be greeted by the sprawling beauty of the lake, spanning over 800 hectares, with 390 hectares of its serene expanse nestled within Puducherry, making it the largest lake in the region. Originally constructed as an artificial lake by the French to provide a reliable source of drinking water, Ousteri Lake has gracefully transformed into a flourishing wetland of immense ecological significance. The lake was declared a bird sanctuary by the Government of India and recognised as an important wetland by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

One of the most delightful experiences at Ousteri Lake is embarking on a boat ride, gently gliding across the shimmering waters, and immersing yourself in the captivating wetland. As you navigate through the lake’s labyrinthine channels, you’ll be treated to a mesmerising spectacle of diverse bird species gracing the sky above and the shores nearby. The Puducherry Tourism Department Corporation (PTDC) operates a boat club, offering enchanting rides starting at an affordable price of INR 100 per person.
