Mahatma Gandhi Statue
Situated on the Seaside Promenade, the Mahatma Gandhi Statue in Pondicherry, erected in 1965, stands as a towering tribute to the Father of the Nation. Asia’s tallest Gandhi statue attracts a substantial number of visitors each year. It was constructed by the celebrated artist, Roy Chaudhury, of the Madras School of Arts and Crafts. This remarkable 4-meter-tall black marble statue perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, particularly during his historic Dandi March in 1930.
The statue is framed by eight monolithic pillars, which were transported from Gingee Fort in 1866, which is located 70 kilometers away from Pondicherry, preceding the statue’s installation in 1965. These 8-meter-high pillars, typical of South Indian temple columns, are adorned with intricate relief carvings depicting Hindu gods and Nayak chieftains, reflecting their 16th-century origin, as confirmed by Gabriel Jouveau Dubreuil’s research.
The historical connection between these pillars adds depth to their significance. They are believed to have originated from a temple constructed by the Nayaks of Gingee, brought to Pondicherry either as a military trophy or as a gift during the time of Dupleix. While historical records indicate the existence of 168 such pillars, only twelve remain today. Four of these pillars supported the Dupleix Statue in 1870, while the remaining twelve were positioned around what is now known as the Place de la République, later renamed Place de Napoléon III, where the Gandhi Statue found its current home on January 26, 1965, transforming the area into the Gandhi Thidal.

These monolithic pillars not only hold historical significance but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the waterfront. It forms a striking streetscape landmark in Pondicherry’s Boulevard Town. Under the statue, there is a tunnel that once led to Gingee Fort. Initially, the government attempted to desilt and open it for public access. However, due to a tragic incident in the 1960s where several people lost their lives due to suffocation, the tunnel remains permanently closed.
The Mahatma Gandhi Statue’s setting, surrounded by these pillars, creates a picturesque scene opposite the Old Port Pier, making it an integral part of Pondicherry’s heritage. Furthermore, the site features the Gandhi Thidal stage, where various cultural activities, including dance and music performances, are held throughout the year. This well-lit statue adds to the beauty of the beachside, making it a prominent landmark, not just in terms of history but also as a cultural and artistic hub in Pondicherry.
