Kuthba Mosque

Kuthba Masjid, also referred to as Kuthba palli or Jamia Mosque, is a venerable historical gem nestled within the vibrant streets of Pondicherry. Dating back to the 17th century, it is widely believed to be the oldest mosque in the town, bearing witness to centuries of cultural evolution. The mosque is currently located in the Tamil quarter (Mullah Street).

Believed to be the first mosque constructed in Pondicherry, Kuthba palli’s original location was in the White Town. A Dutch map from 1693 indicates the presence of Kuthba palli, which remained in the western part of the White Town until the British demolished it in 1761. Rue de la Monnaie, known as rue de la Mosquee during French Governor Joseph François Dupleix’s rule, was later renamed rue Victor Simonel. This name change remains today, retaining the street’s historical connection as the location of Kuthba mosque.
