Joseph Francois Dupleix Statue

Joseph Francois Dupleix, the notable French governor of Pondicherry, left a lasting legacy in the region during his reign between 1742 and 1754. His remarkable contributions to French influence in India were formally recognized by the French government in 1870, leading to the commissioning of two statues in his honor-one in France and the other here in Puducherry. However, he departed for France after his defeat in the second Carnatic War, leaving behind a legacy that endures in this remarkable statue.

The bronze statue, an imposing 2.88 meter monument, now proudly graces the serene surroundings of Goubert Avenue, at the southern end of Rock Beach. This masterpiece was crafted by the skilled French sculptor Theodore Gruyere. Initially unveiled on July 16, 1870, it was first installed in Dupleix Square (the current location of Jawaharlal Nehru’s statue) on a pedestal made of four sculptured granite pillars from Gingee, which are now placed in Bharathi Park. The Dupleix statue was then shifted to the gardens of the French Consulate. However, it was relocated in 1979 to its current, picturesque location by the beach.

Dupleix’s representation with his prominent nose and substantial jaw in this captivating statue reflects his commanding presence. The statue showcases Dupleix adorned in court dress, complete with a bag wig and long riding boots. His right hand delicately holds a map of Puducherry, while his left rests gracefully on the hilt of his sword.
