French War Memorial

Nestled within a lush garden on Goubert Avenue (Cours chabrol), the French War Memorial, also known as “Monument aux combattants des Indes françaises morts pour la patrie,” in Pondicherry stands as a poignant tribute opposite to Le Café, Pondicherry. This memorial was erected in 1937 to honor French Indian soldiers who sacrificed during First World War. In April 1938, Governor Crocicchia inaugurated it, adding to the city’s heritage.

Back in 1915, France made the decision to bolster its army with recruits from its Asian territories, and India played a crucial role in this effort. This historical connection between India and France during those trying times remains a cherished bond. India’s commitment saw Pondicherry contributing 800 recruits, sending 500 soldiers overseas, but sadly witnessing the loss of 75 lives.

 

Crafted with precision and artistry, the memorial was designed by sculptor Gaston Petit and architect Delafon, boasting a bronze plaque that bears the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during First World War. Subsequently, plaques were added to honor soldiers from Second World War, the French War in Indochina, and the Algerian War. Remarkably, the memorial continues to be under the ownership of France.

Free parking for two-wheelers are available adjacent to the French War Memorial in Mahe de Labourdonnais Street, just opposite to Le café. Car parking facilities are available near old Port, with minimum charges applicable. Please note that vehicles are not permitted to enter the beach road.

Restroom:

Public toilets are situated at the southern end of Goubert Avenue (beach road), near the Dupleix Statue, and another one is located at the northern end of Goubert Avenue (beach road), next to the French Consulate building.

Every year, on July 14, Bastille Day, the memorial comes to life with vibrant decorations and illuminations, paying homage to the colony’s soldiers who participated in First World War. On this significant day, Pondicherry’s Consul General of France graces the event with his / her presence, offering a special speech and laying a wreath at the monument’s base. The commemoration continues as various organizations join in paying their respects. Des Associations Patriotiques Pondichéry, Association des Retraites Militaires de Pondichéry, Française du Monde Aide Section Pondichéry, organizations, CEAFI Elus, Alliance Française de Pondichéry, the Pondicherry Government, and the public all unite in this solemn homage, contributing to the profound significance of the occasion.

 

Additionally, “Defense and Citizenship Day” is observed in November, where students from local schools learn about French citizenship and attend a ceremony at the memorial on November 11 to commemorate the end of First World War. This heartfelt homage is open to local residents, tourists, and the general public, inviting all to join in honoring the soldiers’ bravery and sacrifices.

 

The memorial’s architectural design blends French and Indian influences seamlessly, featuring a majestic white pillar crowned with a soldier’s statue, a powerful symbol of resilience and bravery. The meticulously landscaped garden surrounding the monument enhances its serene ambiance, creating a tranquil space for reflection.
