The main feature of Bharathi Park is the stunning Aayi Mandapam, also known as Aayi Kulam, which was built in the 18th century. This remarkable structure, comparable in significance to the Arc of Triomphe, Champs Élysées in Paris, serves as the official logo of Pondicherry’s territorial government. Erected by Emperor Napoleon III, the monument pays homage to Aayi, a lady who selflessly financed the construction of a large pond to alleviate the thirst of the neighbouring city of Muthirapalayam. Remarkably, the water from Aayi’s pond was channelled to a fountain beneath the monument, becoming an integral part of Pondicherry’s modern water supply network, thanks to the efforts of French engineer Louis Guerre. The Aayi Mandapam stands as a testament to Aayi’s remarkable contribution to the community.

In 2006, the park underwent renovations, transforming it into a fully pedestrianised space surrounded by a fence and adorned with four gates, further enhancing its appeal. The park’s design cleverly draws attention to the magnificent Aayi Mandapam, with granite walkways encircling and radiating from the mandapam, highlighting its significance. The park’s compound wall features an ornate cast iron fence, and four intricately designed cast iron gates provide access from different directions. The square-shaped Aayi Mandapam stands proudly with its fluted circular twin columns and pediments, one of which showcases a captivating depiction of Aayi holding a water pot alongside a wonderfully crafted bust of her. Though the central fountain is no longer functional, it adds to the historical charm of the monument. Within Bharathi Park, visitors will also find four Gingee columns, previously used as the pedestal for the Dupleix statue. Cast-iron lampposts illuminate the park’s pathways, creating a captivating ambiance during the evening hours.
