The Commune, a short-lived revolution that was bloodily crushed, laid the foundations for a different political and social organisation that broke with the domination of the property-owning classes. It was an experience that had a profound impact on the political and social history of France and the rest of the world.
One hundred and fifty years on, the generosity of the Communards’ debates, the unprecedented place given to women, and the rejection of nationalist withdrawal echo many of our contemporary questions.
